Jitin Kain is the deputy director of Public Works for the City of South Bend, providing oversight for departmental operations such as street maintenance, snow removal, refuse collection, water and wastewater functions as well as the design and construction of public buildings and infrastructure.

Jitin leads several transportation initiatives in Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s administration, including the introduction of shared mobility options and the relocation of the South Shore commuter rail line station to downtown South Bend. Recently, he completed the award-winning Smart Streets Initiative that realigned downtown South Bend streets, a $25 million project that has already resulted in over $100 million in private investment. He was appointed by Mayor Pete to the Transpo Board of Directors in 2016 and currently serves as Chairman of the Board.

Jitin began his career in public service with the City of South Bend after graduating from Ball State University with a Master of Urban and Regional Planning in 2002. He holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture & Urban Planning from the Indian Institute of Technology. He resides in a historic home near downtown South Bend with his wife and two children.
